As the workshop series with maestros Andres Laza Moreno and Isabel Acuna comes to an exciting conclusion this weekend (5 more workshops and Farewell Milonga), this is a reminder that the Farewell Milonga is happening this Saturday! If you have not already purchased a ticket (which comes with 1 drink) at $35, please do try to catch me (Louis) or Esthee (Studio Up) as soon as possible because the door price will be $45.

Dear friends,

Andres and Isabel have finally arrived in Singapore two days ago. It is their first visit to Singapore and they are looking so forward to spending the next week and a half here. So far they have been extremely happy to bask in Singapore's balmy tropical heat after the freezing cold in Beijing, and they have already sampled some local foods after their first day of private classes.

To kick of the workshop series, we will be holding a Welcome Milonga tonight at Lumbia. This will be a great chance for the workshop participants to meet the masters and show our hospitality, before the intensive workouts over the weekend. Performances will take place between 11-11.30pm. Come and relax after a hard day in the office!

Some quick words about the logistics for tonight and this weekend.

If you did not pre-register for tonight's milonga, please pay Emma at the counter (Lumbia).
If you have pre-registered for tonight's milonga and/or workshops but not yet paid me please look for me to make the payment.
If you have already paid for the Farewell Milonga but has not received a ticket yet, please also look for me during the milonga.
For tomorrow's workshops, the nearest MRT stations are Bras Basah and Bugis. There is ample public parking in the area but do come earlier since the traffic can be heavy during mid-day. Note that there is only limited parking at Waterloo Centre itself but please DO NOT park illegaly inside the car park because it is frequently patrolled.

With the conclusion of the Studio Up's first-anniversary bash last Sunday (27 March), the next major event in the local tango calendar is the impending arrival of maestros Andres Laza Moreno and Isabel Acuna, for their first visit to Singapore. In fact, we are very excited that they will be arriving in one week's time!

After speaking with a number of you, we have decided to extend the early bird deadline by 2 more days. Do take advantage of the savings (discounts of 11-29% compared to paying at the door) if you have not already done so.

The Farewell Milonga is held at a new venue that Esthee (Studio Up) discovered recently, along Orchard Road. It has a lovely floor and excellent sound system. After two weekends of intensive workshops, it will be a wonderful way to relax and wind down. Bring along your non-dancing friends too so they can bask in the atmosphere and enjoy lovely performances by the maestros.

After mesmerising and enthralling tango lovers in Seoul, Hong Kong and Bejing (where they are now) in the past 2 months, the maestros Andres "El Bichi" Laza Moreno and Isabel Acuña will finally be arriving in Singapore in another 2 weeks' time!

Early Bird Specials

This is a gentle reminder of the cut-off date (this Sunday 27 March) for early bird specials which is fast approaching. As usual, do try to take advantage of these early-bird discounts (between 10-29%!) and reserve your spot in the upcoming workshops.

Due to the length of stay by the maestros, we have structured the workshops to provide a broad view of various elements in Tango Salon, or tango for the social dance floor. For example, there is a total of 4 classes on technique, 3 in expressions in tango salon, 3 on milonga and 2 on musicality. We are very fortunate to be in a position where there is such a wide arsenal of tango skills to select from, with topics that will benefit novices, as well as intermediate to advanced dancers. Do note that the weekend workshops are progressive in nature, so participants in later workshops are highly advised to consider joining the earlier classes in the same group.

Villa Urquiza Style

For those who are yet to know about Andres and Isabel first hand, they are two bright sparks in the young generation of teachers/dancers but the style they dance occupies a significant place in tango history. As a matter of fact, many discerning dancers who visit Buenos Aires have taken classes with Andres (flatmate of Javier Rodriguez), who shared training and vocabulary from the same veteran milongueros of Villa Urquiza.

The "Estilo Villa Urquiza" (or Villa Urquiza Style) was the style popular in the neighbourhood of Villa Urquiza, an outer suburb of Buenos Aires, during the Golden Age of the tango, which remains a tango stronghold since the 1930s till the present day. Two long standing milongas in Villa Urquiza - Club Sunderland and Sin Rumbo - attract visitors from around the world. The Villa Urquiza style is characterized by one of the most beautiful tango "walks", interspersed with musical adornments and elegant movements with abundance of giros, enrosques (swirls or tight pivots) and lapices (drawing an arc with extended foot like a pencil). Andres and Isabel are among the key proteges of veteran milongueros Jorge Dispari and Maria "La Turca" Carmen, who trained some of today's top dancers including Geraldine Rojas (their daughter), Javier Rodriguez and Sebastian Arce. Andres and Isabel remain close members of the Dispari entourage, accompanying Jorge and Maria to milongas everywhere in Buenos Aires.

By the way, the early bird deadline does not apply to the 2 milongas organised as part of the maestros' visit. However, the door price will definitely be higher and we do appreciate if you can register early so that we can plan the seating appropriately as we wish for everyone to have a great time at the milongas!

For the past five years, IXI Danza has been inviting renowned international maestros of Argentine tango to share their insights with the Singapore tango community. To continue this tradition, we are very glad to present maestros Andres Laza Moreno and Isabel Acuña, who will be coming (April 6 - April 17) to Singapore for the first time.

We met Andres and Isabel during the 2010 Sydney Salon Tango Festival, where they were one of the three featured couples. We were very impressed by their dancing and their passion and dedication towards teaching, and were honored to be approached to host them when they decided to include Singapore as part of their current Asian tour (including Seoul, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Taipei).

Some highlights of Andres and Isabel's stay include - 2 milongas with performances by the maestros, and - a total of 13 group classes covering many exciting topics (spanning 4 categories: technique, salon tango, milonga and musicality).

In the meantime, our friend Isaac Ho will be rounding off a month of workshops with a special weekend of tango, Milongueando Con Los Amigos on 26/27 Feb. As Isaac will be returning to Buenos Aires shortly after this, this will be the last opportunity to catch up with him.

Special guests for this weekend are Royce and Jean-Michel, and Leonel and Florencia.

Royce and Jean-Michel have played an important part in the development of tango scene in Singapore from 2004 to 2006. They ran a cosy milonga called Las Ventanas del Corazon and were influential in introducing close embrace milonguero style tango to Singapore. In addition, Leonel and Florencia are guest teachers from Seoul who will be conducting workshops over the weekend. They have contributed to the growth of the Korean tango scene - one of the best in Asia. They will also be available to give private classes.

I hope this email finds you well. It's been a bit quiet lately on this list, but as we head into the holiday season there will be more tango happenings!

On this coming Friday (19/11) there will be a one-off milonga hosted by our local tanguera Belinda Tang, held at Xen Bar (nowadays known as Lumbia) 10.30pm-1.30am. The milonga is preceded by a class on "Navigation" from 9.30pm-10.30pm. The class is suitable for anyone who has grasped the basics and ready to attend a milonga. I will go through concepts and exercises that will improve your ability to maneuver safely on the social dance floor. We look forward to your support!

Dear friends,

We hope that you managed to catch the concert "Cafe de los Maestros" over the past weekend? We were certainly enthralled by the whole experience!

In the next two months, all tango lovers in Singapore will be in for a treat as there will be lots more tango action to come, so you'd better go ahead and dust off those dance shoes if you have not already done so. In particular, I want to highlight the return of Javier Rodriguez and Andrea Misse to Singapore in May.

Javier, a true maestro of tango salon, has already captured the hearts of tango dancers all over Asia, and he will be joined by his regular partner Andrea Misse for the present tour. In fact, much of how we dance and our understanding of tango culture is owed to both of them.

Javier and Andrea will be in Singapore from 12-17 May 2010. During their stay, they will hold 6 group classes and a grand milonga will be held to welcome them. As usual, the workshops will be held over the weekend (15-16 May), but note that the grand milonga will be held on Friday 14 May at the YMCA (One Orchard Road,Singapore 238824). Mark your calendar!

<ADV> Approaching end of 2009

Dear friends,

Last weekend (5-6 December) saw the conclusion of another successful Art of Tango series of workshops with Hsueh-tze Lee. The class materials for the final two days were challenging but also certain to enrich our dancing in the near future. Overall, all of the classes were well attended, with close to 30 people for quite a few classes and more than 20 people even for the weekday class. More significantly the gender ratio was relatively well balanced for most classes - a good sign that male population in the tango community is slowly increasing.

Thanks to everyone who came to support the workshops and the milonga. In particular we would like to acknowledge the generous support of Xen Bar for the milonga, and Niranjan for helping with the accommodation for Hsueh-tze. It is always a challenge to organise an event such as this and we (myself, Janet, How Meng and Su Lynn) appreciate all your support and advice!

How to follow up after the workshops?

In our experience, the best way to get the most of any workshops is to try to recall and practice the new materials while these ideas are still relatively fresh on the mind and preferably practicing together with other workshop participants. I am usually available to guide some exercises during the Friday practicas at Xen Bar. You are welcome to come and discuss anything related to the workshop or other technical issues.

During the holiday season in the coming weeks, the Tuesday milongas at Xen Bar will continue as usual.
