Date: November 16th 2009

Dear friends,

After months of preparations, Hsueh-tze will finally arrive in Singapore next week to conduct the Art of Tango series!

Welcome Milonga
===============

As is customary when IXI Danza is hosting international instructors, a Welcome Milonga has been planned for Hsueh-tze's fourth visit to Singapore.

Date/Time: Saturday 28 November, 8.30pm - 1am
Theme: "Black and White"
DJ: Louis
Cost: $12, 1 drink included
Venue: Xen Bar, Block 163 Bukit Merah Central #04-3575.

Come join us in recreating visually the milonga scenes of Buenos Aires of the 30's and 40's!

Come dressed in the sophistication of Black and purity/peace/calm of White, and dance the night away in a relaxing atmosphere in the comforting embrace of your partner. For the workshop participants especially, this will be a great chance to relax and immediately put to use the milonguero techniques you have worked on during the day. You may also get to hear some old and rare Tango's from Europe (as opposed to Buenos Aires) during the night as an added bonus!

Workshop Highlights
===================

Regardless of your dancing level, (re)discover dancing in close embrace (Close Embrace 1-3) from the instructor who was instrumental in laying the foundations for many active close embrace dancers in Singapore. What can you expect from these classes? Leaders can learn to be less forceful and more attentive, followers can learn how to be a more active participant in the dance. More challenging topics will be presented in CE 4-6.

In the second week of the workshops, 3 classes are devoted to musicality series (Musicality 1 - 3). For the people who may be unfamiliar with this term, musicality is not the same as knowing the names of the orchestras. In fact, musicality also goes way beyond recognizing the stereotypical generalizations for each of the major orchestras, e.g. Pugliese is only represented by the heavy thumping and dramatic pauses, D’Arienzo means only the ric-tic-tic marching rhythm and Fresedo means always a certain romantic silkiness, etc. Musicality has more to do with how we can recognize the phrasing in the music, the syncopations, the change from rhythmic to melodic, just to name a few, and how dancers can express those elements. Ultimately, it allows us – both leaders and followers – to transform a series of steps into a moving dance.

While this is obviously important for leaders, musicality is equally important for followers in Tango. As has been commented before, "the difference between a good follower and a great follower lies in her musicality. If a follower doesn't know the music and how to express herself on the music, she will never be a great dancer." Now, whether you aspire to greatness or not, having a better appreciation of the music you dance to will certainly enrich your dancing, regardless of your level.

Private Classes
===============

Finally, a reminder for those who are interested in taking private classes to please email me as soon as possible to reserve your slots. Hsueh-tze's time in Singapore is limited and from past experience, there usually are many frantic last-minute requests for private classes. To avoid the possibility of missing out on learning from an excellent teacher, reserve early!

Hope to see you all!

Louis.
